Michael Livingston is the Executive Director of the International Council of Community Churches. Committed to congregational autonomy, racial reconciliation, ecumenical witness, and mission, the Council has a broad diversity of churches and centers in the United States and parts of Africa, Canada, and Europe. Rev. Livingston has a B.A. from UCLA and the M.Div. and Th.M degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary. Rev. Livingston spent 14 years at Princeton Seminary as first the Director of Admissions and then the Campus Pastor and Director of the Chapel. Ordained by the PC (USA) he has served congregations in Los Angeles and New York.
Rev. Livingston is the Immediate Past President (2006-2007) of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC). Rev. Livingston’s service to the NCC has been characterized by inter-faith dialogue and peace-making initiatives; he led delegations to Paris, France; Astana, Kazakhstan, and Beirut, Lebanon (following the war in the summer of 2006). He has been a member of the Governing Board of the NCC since 1999 and a member of the Board of Church World Service (the humanitarian arm of the 35 member communions of the NCC) since 2001. Other ecumenical work includes service as a member of the PC(USA) General Assembly’s Special Committee on the Consultation on Church Union (now Churches Uniting in Christ, CUIC) from 1973-1999 and as chair of the committee and a member of the Executive Board of the COCU from 1993-1999.
From 1987 to 2001 Rev. Livingston served as the editor of Liberation and Unity: A Guide for Meditation and Action and has published sermons in the Princeton Seminary Bulletin, The Inclusive Pulpit and the African American Pulpit. He contributed a chapter entitled “An End to Silence” in the 1997 publication Called Out With: Stories of Solidarity (Edited by Thorson-Smith, van Wijk-Bos, Pott, and Thompson, Westminster John Knox, 1997). He is also the author of Done in Love: Edler G. Hawkins, (Church & Society, 1987).
